History
The
Broadwood Morris Men take their name from The
Broadwood Family and in particular Lucy Etheldred Broadwood (1858-1929),
a founder member of the Folk Song Society. Through her pioneering
efforts many of our local songs have been preserved for future
generations.
The founder members of the Broadwood Men asked Captain Broadwood back
in 1971 if they could use the name for their new Horsham Morris Dance
side.
The captain said he was delighted as he felt that Lucy never achieved
the true level of recognition that she deserved.
Each May Day, The Broadwood Men pay their respects to Lucy Broadwood at
Rusper Village Church, and later in the day at her ancestral home of
Lyne House.
